Akın Ünver was born and raised in Ankara, Turkey where he was involved with music at a very early age. After studying the piano and music theory for 10 years, he switched to classical guitar and studied with Özgür Tuncer for 4 years at Ahmet Kanneci’s studio in Ankara. At 17, he started to study directly with Ahmet Kanneci and became an instructor at his studio, as well as Hacettepe University’s classical guitar program. In 2001 Akın won the third prize in the annual Antonio Lauro classical guitar competition in Ankara, after which he broadened his scope away from classical music and sampled a wide array of musical instruments including ney, electric guitar and kanun. Meanwhile, Akın was still teaching guitar technique courses at Ahmet Kanneci’s studio and Hacettepe University’s classical guitar program.
Akın was introduced to the chapman stick in 2004 and switched to chapman stick altogether. Since then, he uses the chapman stick exclusively as his main instrument.
